The election process to appoint the Inaugural Board is now officially open. This initiative provides a significant opportunity for human rights defenders and activists to engage actively in the governance of the organization and to contribute to the formulation and direction of its strategic plan for the next four years.
We are seeking for four committed, diverse and passionate civil society leaders and human rights defenders to join our inaugural board in governing The Trans Refugee Initiative Uganda for the 2027-2029 term.
Make your nominations or applications by midnight EAT 2nd October 2026 here. The TRIU Board particulary encouranges nominations of representatives from trans and gender diverse communities, refugee, migrants and displaced communities.
NOMINATION COMMITTEE
The Board’s nomination committee comprises of three anonymous individuals to oversee the 2026 Board Elections.
The nomination committee shall be guided by an extensive array of considerations during the selection of candidates to ensure a thorough and comprehensive evaluation process. In addition to the standard eligibility criteria delineated below, these considerations will encompass the specific skills and expertise requisite for the Board to adeptly navigate the challenges ahead, while also ensuring regional and sectoral representation that mirrors the diverse landscape of our community. Moreover, the committee will accord significant importance to the promotion of diversity and the inclusion of the most marginalized and excluded groups, acknowledging that a diverse range of perspectives enriches decision-making and fosters innovation. This inclusive approach not only enhances the quality of governance but also fortifies the Board’s connection to the broader community it serves, ultimately resulting in more effective and equitable outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
Criteria for Board Nominations
In order to stand for or vote for a preferred candidate, you must either be an individual self identifying as trans or gender diverse and refugee, migrant or displaced person or a representative of an LGBTQI+ or refugee led organization.
We welcome all civil society and human rights actors who demonstrate that they are committed to strengthening civil society and minority person’s rights, adhere to the principles enshrined in The Commonwealth Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights and use peaceful means to pursue their objectives.
Other desired criteria will include.
- A robust commitment to and endorsement of TRIU’s mission, vision, objectives, and goals. Affirming the principles of accountability, diversity, and inclusion that are integral to our identity as an organization.
- Ability to devote the time and energy to responsibilities of the Board, including regular attendance at meetings, serving on sub-committees of the Board and representing TRIU externally where needed.
- Contributing to our strategic vision by providing direction and inputs to the development of the strategic plan that is backed by measurable goals and financial resources.
- Willingness to understand, accept and comply with Board responsibilities and policies.
- Support to shared outcomes needed through teamwork, enthusiasm, innovation and candidness.
- Support to advancing the learning and achievements of the organization through critical insights and judgements.

Guidelines on the election process.
We shall organise anonymous voting after the nomination committee has finalised with the election process.
During the voting process, candidates can directly reach out their networks to seek support. However, TRIU discourages aggressive campaigning or the use of intrusive campaigns tactics.
